This mask is based on an excellent job made by creature designer and sculptor Jordu Schell. I took it as a form and color exercise in a single piece.
The first step was to make the sculpture itself, based on a life mask then discarded. In this case, I used Medium Brown NSP Chavant Professional Plasteline, which has become a standard in the industry.
After taking a gypsum mold, the latex cast is made with sufficient material to obtain a semiflexible piece. The amount of filling material prevents distortion when the user is wearing the mask.
Once vulcanized in the kiln, the mask is painted with an aerograph and colors specially formulated for painting latex. No acrylic paints were used because of their poor adherence and crackling with the passage of time
